A History

GEORGE NOTH PURCHASES THE EXISTING PROPERTY ON 301 EAST 2ND STREET
George Noth, owner of The Davenport Bag & Paper Company, demolishes the existing building in 1905, a saloon, and develops what it is now the Peterson Paper building in 1907.
THE BUILDING SURVIVES A FIRE
One of the first fireproof buildings in Davenport, the building survives a fire caused by ashes dumped into wooden barrels.
DAVENPORT BAG & PAPER CATCHES A BREAK
The Davenport Bag & Paper Company receives a sample of the innovative corn pulp paper, containing 65% corn stalk pulp. This method is considered to be the "latest development in papermaking". The Davenport Bag & Paper produces paper bags, wrapping paper and flour sacks.
PETERSON PAPER ABSORBS THE DAVENPORT BAG & PAPER COMPANY

Great Western Supply purchases Peterson Paper and the new firm vacates the building.
Inspired by the Great Chicago Fire, Architects G.A. Hanssen and D.J. Harfst and contractor Walter Hass, created an innovative design with the construction of the "fireproof" Davenport Bag & Paper Company Building. The design and construction methods were a sign of the times. The structure reflects new technology, materials, and construction methods typical of American architecture as it transitioned from 19th century to 20th century forms.
